“We have 52 girls signed up to attend right now,” CHS Head Coach Chris McKelvey said Tuesday. “But I’m hoping more will sign up throughout the week and more will come the day of the event.”
The cost is $25 per child, with discounts to families with more than one child participating. The clinic will offer young ladies, kindergarteners through seventh graders instructions on the fundamentals of fast-pitch softball. Groups are divided by age and limited in number.
McKelvey said last year that around 48 girls showed up for the clinic, and he expects this year to be the biggest so far.
“It’s our fourth year doing it and we are expecting it to be our biggest year,” McKelvey said. “It seems like the Recreation Department has more teams this year, so it is looking like the sport is growing in this area.”
All participants at the clinic will receive a free T-shirt and lunch will be included. McKelvey will supervise the clinic and will be helped by assistant coaches Wes Astin and Darby Harrison as well as the 2007 varsity and junior varsity teams.
“I’m excited,” McKelvey said. “It’s a great opportunity to get girls involved in the sport and to teach them the game. We’ve only had fast-pitch softball in this area since 1999, so it’s still a relatively new sport around here.”
McKelvey also noted that a girl doesn’t have to play on a softball team to attend the clinic.
“Not at all,” McKelvey said. “If it’s a girl that has never played on a team, she can still come out and learn the game. Hopefully it will help more girls get involved in this sport.”

“As long as the weather holds out, it’s going to be a great time for all involved,” McKelvey said. “I encourage anyone interested in softball to come out this Saturday.”
