Three Polk County churches are combining their efforts and resources to provide a meal for the needy on Saturday, Feb. 13.

Meals will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Cedartown. Also participating will be adults and youth groups from East View Baptist Church and Youngs Grove Baptist Church.

One of the organizers, Jeff Burris, said the idea was spurred by a visit from a relative in Louisiana. After learning about the regular meals provided by churches there, Burris said he contacted other church members about doing something similar here.

“A lady who works with my wife, her church had been wanting to do something similar,” Burris said. “We’re all excited and looking forward to Saturday.”

This collaboration was scheduled to coincide with the Valentine’s Day holiday, which falls on Sunday.

Burris notes that the community already has a community meal served in the Goodyear community, but that’s at the end of the month.

“There’s not a whole lot else going on in the middle of the month,” he said.

Volunteers are hoping to serve from 50 to 100 people at the dinner. With the ongoing economic recession, there is sure to be many in need of a good, hot meal, Burris said.

The basic menu is expected to include turkey, ham, green beans, and other vegetables.

“It’s going to be a good meal,” Burris said.

Anyone wishing to help out or to make a donation should call First United Methodist Church at 770-748-4731.
