EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — New York Giants backup halfback and former Rockmart High School standout Danny Ware dislocated an elbow returning the opening kickoff in the season opener against the Washington Redskins on Sunday.

Ware, who is the third back behind Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw, was hurt when he was tackled at the end of the 17-yard return. After being treated on the field, he walked to the locker room.

The 6-foot, 234-pound Ware was beginning his third season with the Giants. He left Georgia following his junior season as a running back for the Bulldogs and declared for the draft in January 2007.

Ware had been gaining steam as a serious contender for a spot as a regular running back for the Giants during the preseason and caught a touchdown pass against Carolina in New York’s first preseason game.

He has spent most of his time on special teams where he has become a reliable kickoff returner.
