The Rockmart High School Thespians are planning a trip to New York City next March.

The 10 adults and 19 students will spend five days and four nights seeing the sights and attending Broadway and off-Broadway shows.

They will also have opportunities to attend theatre workshops and meet with professional actors.

Several fund-raisers are planned to help finance this educational experience.

RHS students will be able to wear a Halloween costume to school on Oct. 31 for a donation of $3. No masks are allowed and the costumes must meet Polk School District’s dress code.

Another fund-raising event will be the first annual “Pajama Drama” for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. An overnight workshop of drama games and exercises will be held at RHS on Dec. 5 & 6.

RHS Thespians and others will conduct the workshops, feed the children dinner, and then put them to bed for the night. They will perform the next morning for their parents when they come to pick them up. The cost is $50 per child and information and applications can be picked up at RHS or by calling Margaret Jacobs at 770-684-5984.

The Thespians are also working on several shows this Fall.

The musical "Godspell" will be the One Act Entry this year. It was performed for the public on Sturday, Oct. 25 andSunday, Oct. 26 at the Art Center Theatre in downtown Rockmart.

Encore performances will be held at the same venue this Saturday and Sunday.

"Godspell" is a modern adaptation of the life of Jesus as found in the Gospel of Matthew. The play is directed by Margaret Jacobs and features Luke Camp as Jesus, Zach Huskins as John the Baptist/Judas, and disciples Stevi Earwood, Abby Huffstetler, Jesse Beatty, Aimee Renshaw, Perren Leatherwood, Kelsey Pringle, and Hayden Arp.

Aimee and Hayden also play piano along with Ethan Purser on the guitar, and Casey Duke on drums.

Also this fall on Nov. 8 and 9, Rockmart High School and Rockmart Middle School will present three one act plays to include: “Once Upon a Playground” directed by Donna Duff; “Beauty is a Beast” directed by Loren Spinks; and “Early Frost” directed by senior thespian Casey Bennett.

Along with all of these performances and fundraisers, RHS Thespians still plan to participate in the annual Trick or Treat so Kids Can Eat Campaign sponsored by the Educational Theatre Association and the International Thespian Society.

They will be collecting canned food for the local food bank during the week of Halloween and at al of the above mentioned shows.
