The Cedartown High School soccer teams were swept at Cedartown Memorial Stadium last Tuesday by Cass.

The Bulldogs (3-7 overall, 0-6 Region 6-AAA) lost to the Colonels 2-1. The Lady Bulldogs (1-9, 0-6) were defeated by the Lady Colonels 6-1.

The following is a recap of each game:

During the boys contest, the Bulldogs fell behind early and were forced to play catch up for most of the game.

“We came out flat and gave up a quick goal,” Bulldogs Head Coach John Sheffield said. “From that point on we played them even. They had more speed than us but we played hard. But we always seem to be playing from behind.”

Luis Barrientos scored off a corner kick five minutes into the contest to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead.

Andres Flores scored a goal at the 35 minute mark to give the Colonels a 2-0 lead.

“We made a mistake in the back that gave up the second goal,” Sheffield said. “That is what has been frustrating this season. We’ve made mistakes in the back that have hurt us.”

The Bulldogs lone goal came with two minutes left in the game when Omar Campos scored on a penalty kick.

Cedartown’s Armando Barrientos had a chance to tie the game with a minute left, but his direct kick was pushed over the crossbar by Cass’ goalie.

“We have many things to work on,” Sheffield said. “But the most important thing is we need to learn to play as a team. I think we lose sight of that during the game.”

Cass (7-1-1, 5-0) has now won six straight games.

“There is no quit in our team,” Sheffield said. “We are still working hard in practice and trying to improve.”

In the girls game, the Lady Bulldogs fell behind early and were never able to stay on the attack.

The Lady Colonels (8-2, 4-1) scored their first goal in the fifth minute when Kristina Heinrich scored off an assist from Katie Richard.

Chelsea Kirkland scored in the 19th minute to make it 2-0 and Katy Fleming scored 11 minutes later to make it 3-0.

Kirkland scored her second goal of the match at the 34 minute mark to make it 4-0.

With 3:19 remaining in the opening half, Mari Turner scored a goal for Cedartown to cut the halftime deficit to one, 4-1.

Jamie Corrado scored in the 59th minute for Cass and Kirkland scored her third goal of the contest on a penalty kick at the 61 minute mark to make it 6-1.

Cass finished the game with 19 shots on goal while Cedartown had only one.

Lady Bulldog goalie Ashley Benefield did record numerous saves, including four in the opening half of play.

Jordan Stiles was Cass’ goalie in the second half and helped keep Cedartown scoreless for the final 40 minutes of play.

The Cedartown soccer teams are back on the field Tuesday visiting Cartersville. The girls start at 5:30 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 p.m.
