"There are no active fires in Polk County," Forestry Chief Ranger Denise Croker stated Saturday afternoon. She said that a wind shift and weather pattern brought in the heavy smoke.
The only fire that has occurred today was early this morning on the Polk/Haralson line, she explained. "It was a 10-acre fire and would not produce this amount of smoke," she said.
Croker said that local officials have been on alert and the 911 emergency center as well as the forestry department had fielded hundreds of calls from concerned citizens.
"The smoke hopefully will clear within the next couple of days," Croker continued."If you see fire then call 911."
There is a burn ban in effect for Polk County.
