The addition of speed bumps along a section of East John Hand Road has apparently stirred up a hornet’s nest of local opinion.

The recently placed speed bumps along the city road was an issue debated by commissioners last Thursday.

Commissioner Ray Merritt stated that he had been overwhelmed with complaints about the speed bumps.

“I’ve had more complaints about that than everything together since I’ve been here,” Merritt said.

Resident James Mayben spoke in defense of the speed bumps, saying that he and other residents of East John Hand Road were in agreement about them when they were first placed there. He said the speed bumps cut down on dangerous speeders in that area.

“I cannot back out of my driveway,” Mayben said. “I don’t want to move and I don’t want to get killed.”

Commissioners agreed to leave the speed bumps in place but to paint them so that they are more noticeable to drivers.
