The Cedartown soccer team picked up a big region win last weekend and also tied the Cass Lady Colonels in a key region game. Cedartown (4-5-1 overall, 1-2-1 Region 6-AAA) is now tied with Cass for third place in the region while Cartersville (7-0, 3-0) and Carrollton (8-2-1, 3-0) are tied for first.

During last Thursday’s game against Cass, the Lady Bulldogs took an early 1-0 lead when Khalefa King assisted to Britni Harris for a goal. Cass (1-7-1, 1-2-1) responded with a goal right before the half to tie the game at one.

With the scored tied at two, Cedartown took the lead with four minutes left when Harris passed the ball to King for a score. With under a minute remaining, Cass scored their third goal of the game to tie Cedartown at three and end the game in a tie.

“Our team is getting better with each game we play,” Cedartown Head Coach John Sheffield stated. “Our goal is to get to the state playoffs. In order to do that we have to learn how to finish games. We were up three different times in this game and each time we let them get back in it. The effort was there but we just didn’t put them away.”

Against Central-Carrollton (0-5, 0-4) on Friday the Lady Bulldogs erupted for five goals as they cruised past the Lady Lionettes 5-0. “This was a big game for us,” Sheffield said. “We dominated from the opening whistle. Our mind set was to take it to them and not let them gain any momentum or confidence.”

Harris scored two goals to lead Cedartown and Christie Pugh, Ana Godoy and Tiffany Head all scored one goal. Godoy’s first half goal might have been the best, as Godoy headed the ball in for a score.

“We have been working on scoring goals using our head off corner kicks and Ana put one in. It was a great goal,” Sheffield added.

Jenny Grove, LeeAnne Woodhouse, Jessica Jones and Harris each had one assist during the game.

“I am so proud of this team,” Sheffield added. “We started 1-5 and we knew it would take some time to come together as a team and they have. Our seniors and juniors have been leaders in practices and games. I can’t say enough about this team. They have a great attitude and they are willing to do what it takes to be successful.”

The Lady Bulldogs were supposed to play Woodland on Tuesday but due to bad weather the game was cancelled.

Cedartown will now be off until after spring break when they return to action against Darlington on April 6 at 5:30 p.m.
