The gears are moving fast on getting a new special purpose, local option sales tax referendum for Rome and Floyd County on the November ballot.

At least a dozen applications from people wishing to be on the 2013 Citizen SPLOST Committee were turned in to the Floyd County Commission by the deadline of 5 p.m. Monday.

At their regular meetings next week, both the Floyd County and Rome boards of commissioners will make appointments to the committee. These representatives will hear proposals and make recommendations on public projects and capital purchases that could be funded through a 1-cent tax.

City and county officials would have the final say on the package, which is slated to be finalized in September and put to a vote in the Nov. 5 general election. The 2009 SPLOST collection will end June 30.

Six residents will be selected by the County Commission, plus one to represent the city of Cave Spring. The City Commission will appoint four residents.

In addition to the eleven members, a chairman or co-chairs will be appointed by the boards to lead the group. A Floyd County commissioner and a Rome city commissioner also will be part of the committee, but neither will have a vote.

The goal is for the committee to hold its first meeting by the beginning of March.

Floyd County Commissioner Rhonda Wallace, who will serve as the County Commission’s representative on the committee, said that while last year’s proposed SPLOST didn’t pass, other SPLOSTs have been successful endeavors.

“Many SPLOSTs have passed that have got us to where we are today,” Wallace said. “We’re thinking ahead for the future, and we have to do that in order for our community to grow. The projects

we fund will bring in new economic development and new industry.”

Rome Mayor Evie McNiece will be the City Commission’s representative on the committee.

The Rome City Commission will meet Monday, while the Floyd County Commission is set to meet Tuesday.

You all want a laugh? Go to your local law enforcement agency and ask for the list of police officer salaries. Compare years of service and so forth to local teachers and local police officers. This fact is embarrassing. In the end, the citizens are the victims. And don't ask what the turn over-rate is because you probably won't get the accurate figure.

I'm not saying the teachers'salaries are out of line. I support their demanding and ever challenging passion.

We all know law enforcement officers don't join for monetary motivations. They join because they love people and want the best for our communities. But, they do have to make a living.

I agree with your post, except for the last sentence. Police officers do not "love people". Reasons to become a police officer are: 1.a job (money).Agreed, it's not much, but it is a job. 2.Freshly discharged military, still indoctrinated to follow orders without question. 3. Macho/ego/power trip/ authority.And a very small percentage of civic minded individuals who really do care about their communities and safety.

Citizens need to make up their minds about education. Do you want to make it mandatory that your children be educated or not? And what will the implications of that decision be? Do you want teachers to have at least a Bachelors degree with required education instruction or do you want teaching to be an entry level position requiring a high school diploma? And what should the salary be for a profession which requires this amount if schooling?

I agree that this isn't the article for complaints about education cutbacks & teacher jobs. However, I do take extreme offense to your comments about teachers being overpaid for "cush" jobs. Teaching is one of the lowest average paying jobs in this country but has one of the highest effects on our children's futures. Secondly, if you are actually dumb enough to think teaching is a "cush" job, I would like to see you try it. (Before you start, I am not now, nor have I ever been, a teacher; and neither are my parents, siblings or children.)

LEOs and military are some of the lowest paid jobs in this country, but they have the biggest effects on ALL OF OUR futures. In comparison, teachers make a whole lot more with a lot less chance of injury or death.

I agree wholeheartedly - my Dad retired after 31 years as a cop and my son has been in the Army since 2006 and plans to do at least 20 years. My comment about teachers was in specific response to Sneade's comment about teachers being overpaid for 'cush' jobs.

Dempsey, Wallace, McNeese Tennis Center. Chamber of Commerce/GE Athletic Complex. 2 projects that will have a massive marketing blitz. If the state government didn't want to fund the tennis center what makes the Chamber Clan think local taxpayers want to? The Lake Pointe project in Emerson is going to get the money bc of its location on I75.

I'll put all my chips on the Chamber Clan not being up front about maintenance and operating fees. RFPA can't keep the doors open on the parks we already have and our government is going to push building more?

Katie forget about your tennis complex and get our lical education some funding. Rhonda don't be a one term commissioner. Evie, we already know how you love taxation.

Oh, stop it with the teachers, haveagreatweekend. Aren't tax dollars that flow to the schools enough? And the SPLOST is more about construction contracts than it is about education. Take a look at the health dept. building built a few years ago with SPLOST. Better yet, go visit and see if there are any Anglos making use of it.
