Rockmart High School graduate Brandon Haywood was named the SAC co-Offensive Player of the Year after Carson-Newman’s last regular season game.

Last Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs, Haywood showed why he was chosen.

With Carson-Newman trailing Lenoir-Rhyne 35-31, Haywood would keep the ball and sprint 21 yards to paydirt with 2:58 remaining in the game to lift Carson-Newman to a big playoff win.

The score capped a 14-play, 66-yard drive that took nearly six minutes off the clock. Haywood had seven carries on the drive for 43 yards including converting a third and one play with a two-yard run one play before his touchdown sprint.

Haywood had 108 yards rushing in the game on a game-high 34 carries. Haywood also completed six of seven passes for 107 yards, including a game long 47 yard pass to Steven Isom.

Cedartown High School graduate Demetrius Green, playing for Lenoir-Rhyne, had nine tackles in the playoff game.

No. 22 ranked Carson-Newman now advances into the NCAA Division II quarterfinals to face Valdosta State this Saturday in Valdosta, Ga.
