Barry Allen Hitchcock, 40, of 3117 Vinson Mountain Road, Rockmart, was pronounced dead on the scene, according to Polk County Deputy Coroner Tony Brazier.
The driver of the minivan striking Hitchcock is Robert Dwaine Ramey of Winter’s Road, Rockmart, according to Georgia State Patrol (GSP) reports.
Ramey was not cited in the accident and there is no ongoing investigation, GSP reports stated.
Ramey was also taken to a hospital because he was emotionally distressed and overwhelmed, according to officials.
According to officials, Ramey called 911 at 7:44 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12 telling the operator he struck a person in the 3100 block of Vinson Mountain Road.
Brazier said Polk County police, who were the first on the scene, found Hitchcock lying in a ditch off the road. Brazier said he pronounced Hitchcock dead at 8 p.m.
According to GSP reports, Ramey was driving north on Vinson Mountain Road when Hitchcock was walking across the road. Hitchcock was in Ramey’s lane when he was struck by the front of the mini-van, reports state.
“Apparently he had just gotten off work, parked in the driveway, gotten his flashlight out and walked across the road to get his mail,” Brazier said.
“He was walking back and was in (Ramey’s) lane when he was struck.”
Ramey, who lived nearby, was taking his wife and two children to Kennestone Hospital. The family had just received word that Ramey’s father-in-law was in a severe car crash and was taken to the hospital, Brazier said.
