She was born May 23, 1928 in Haralson County, to the late William Eugene and Ethel Garner Sanders.
Mrs. Poteat trusted Jesus as her savior at the age of 13 at a revival at New Canaan Baptist Church in 1941 and remained an active member there until her demise. Everyone who knew her knows how much she loved to be outside in her flower and vegetable gardens.
She was married for 62 years to Stanley Sloman Poteat before his death in February 2009.
Mrs. Poteat was also preceded in death by her siblings, Virginia Johnson, Ruby Hendrix, Geneva Willis, Zenas Sanders, Jimmy Sanders, Earnest Sanders and Madison Sanders; son-in-law, Bobby Walker and her grandparents.
She is survived by her loving family, Dorothy Walker of Buchanan, Cheryl and Matt Beynon of Cummings, Gary and Lennie Poteat of Hiawassee, Ray and Crystal Poteat of Brunswick and Bruce and Debbie Poteat of Buchanan; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and her sister Mattiebelle Johnson of Buchanan.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Aug. 26 at 3 p.m. from New Canaan Baptist Church with Rev. Aaron Johnson officiating. Music was provided by Katie Williams and Bud and Jackie Jones.
Pallbearers were Brian Walker, Brandon Walker, Shane Poteat, Raymond Poteat, Andy Woodruff and Stacy Caldwell. Honorary pallbearers were Ricky Johnson and Phil Fogle. Interment will follow in New Canaan Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to New Canaan Fellowship Hall Building Fund.
The Miller Funeral Home in Tallapoosa was in charge of arrangements.
