No matter what happens on Nov. 6, Democrats will be at least one seat down in the state House.

State Rep. Rick Crawford of Cedartown, one of the few remaining conservative Democrats in the Legislature, says he intends to switch to the GOP – if he survives the general election.

House Speaker David Ralston doesn’t think he will. Crawford faces a tough race in a newly redrawn west Georgia district that has a Democratic performance rating of 27 percent. Crawford’s Republican opponent is Trey Kelley, a 25-year-old manufacturer’s rep.

“I am fully committed to making sure Trey Kelley is elected to the House. He is an outstanding candidate who is working hard and is consistent,” Ralston said this morning. “While I respect Rick Crawford and appreciate his dilemma, the truth is that the [Democratic] Party didn’t just suddenly become liberal. It has been, is, and will continue to be a party that is far to the left of the great majority of Georgians.”

I have known Rick Crawford my whole life and even 20a plus years ago he was as conservative as it gets. He has always been the Democrat many of our grandparents were. I will vote for him and this party switching means nothing to me. That's the problem with the Republicans....they want a candidate with an oath to the party.....nevermind the people, because corporate America comes first. Hardworking people and conservative values is what Rick will represent....NOT the good ole boys and corporate america

Where did you register to be a Democrat? The Democratic Party has changed (no, Zell Miller was the one who changed and unfortunately that came about during the time he was losing his marbles and became laughable)and one way was that it became more inclusive but the Republican Party also changed. It went from being an exclusive club for the silk stocking elite to opening it's doors to another segment of society (President Reagan and his State's Rights speech in Misissippi). Both parties changed, so if you are more comfortble with another, then vote that way and identify yourself as such. Rick Crawford is not a very honorable person as evidenced by the timing of his actions. I suspect that his employment with Shorter Bible College in Rome played a big part in his decision.

I wish Rep. Crawford well........I've been a registered Democrat for decades, and I've voted Republican since the mid-1990's.

I didn't change - the Democratic Party changed.

I suspect that's the reason for Rick Crawford's decision to become a Republican.

This is the most desperate last minute gasp for air I've even seen in a political campaign. He's on the ballot as a Democrat and now that it looks like he's going to lose badly he's suddenly announcing he'll switch to the GOP if elected??? Funniest thing I've ever seen in my life.

Well, at least he forewarned us that he will be a turncoat. The more honorable thing to have done was to have run in the Republican Primary.I guess it just boils down to the fact that "Politics is Politics".

How sad. Just drop out of the race and save face.
