seems 'convictions' would be more appropriate to publish rather than arrests (those arrested are innocent until proven guilty)...that way, those interetesed in wanting to know such information could determine not only 'truly guilty' verdicts, but ALSO whether the court and legal system is working as it should. otherwise, 'arrests' are nothing more than fodder for voyeouristic (sp?) self-rightous bloggers, finger-pointers and gossipers with nothing better to do than look at 'busted' data and comment on it.

I hope our next sheriff doesn't release these no-news arrests. Kelly McLendon is the first sheriff who has ever released Polk County's arrest records.

Certainly arrests of murderers, drug dealers, grand larceny, and other things of public interest should be released.

But the private heartbreaks of ordinary citizens should remain just that: private. It serves no purpose other than providing gossip to report things such as "failure to maintain lane and driving with no license".

Sorry to burst your bubble, AzaleaLover, but all arrests, repeat ALL arrests, are public information and can be released to the public through the news media. This information has been released to the media all the way back to when Seals Swafford was sheriff (this I know for a fact) and possibly even before. Remember this: an arrest doesn't necessarily mean a conviction but any arrest is subject to be released to the public. Also remember this: the sheriff does not dictate what information is to be released or what remains private in these cases. He is mandated by the courts and through legislation to release this information.

As I've said many times, Kelly McLendon has done a great job as our sheriff and he will continue to do so for at least the next four years.
