Work continues on the new Silver Comet Trailhead, which will be located in the former Senior Citizens Center.

City staff has stripped, buffed and waxed the floors and is painting the interior. They have also cleaned windows and enhanced the exterior of the building.

City Manager Jeff Ellis said he hopes the facility will be open by Labor Day, Sept. 3.

Plans are to put vending machines in the space to allow cyclists a place to rest as they travel along the trail.

Ellis said he has talked to people who indicate they will volunteer to stay at the site during scheduled hours.

He also recognized the dedication of City staff during the hot days of June and July.

“Over the past month, there has been significant effort made to maintain services with minimal disruption as we have experienced a number of water leaks to both service lines and mains throughout Rockmart.”

City crews have also been busy with other projects.

This includes the Lane Street water tank where rehabilitation work is 95 percent complete.

Ellis said he has received no complaints regarding pressure or volume demand. He believes the project will be completed during the next few weeks.

He noted that local police officers have completed firearms qualifications and that fire and police staff will be busy during the Homespun Festival on July 20-21.
