Citizen stops suspected burglars

An alert neighbor held four people at gunpoint for police after catching them allegedly attempting to steal a garage door.

Polk County Police Department reports state the incident happened Monday, July 16 around 5 p.m. at 43 Little Road, Cedartown.

Officers said they answered the call of a theft in progress. Reports state they arrived to find Brandon Garner holding a rifle to maintain four people near a burgundy Ford Explorer.

Garner told police he caught the four trying to load up a garage door, reports said.

The four arrested are Brian Alexander Jones, 17, Patrick James Goddard, 20, Michaela Dawn Bailey, 18, and Shasta Renea Meeker, 18, all of Cedartown.

Jones, Goddard and Bailey are all charged with misdemeanor theft by taking. Meeker is charged with party to a crime.

Reports state Garner told police he was doing yard work and kept hearing noises. At some point, he stopped them and told police he heard Bailey say “I am not stealing.”

Garner told them the property didn’t belong to them so they were stealing, reports state.

Goddard told police a friend asked for help so he helped them load up the garage door into the Explorer.

Bailey said she didn’t know she was stealing. The garage door had been there for a while, so she thought it would be okay, according to reports.

Goddard told police that Meeker, who is pregnant, never exited the vehicle

All were booked into the Polk County Jail. All were booked into the Polk County Jail. Meeker and Bailey have bonded out. Jones and Goddard remain in jail, according to reports.

The Explorer was being hooked up to a tow truck when Michelle Bailey walked up and told police the vehicle belonged to her and she could drive it home.

Police told her the truck was involved in a crime and she would have to call the tow truck company after the vehicle was put into the system in order to get it back.
