CARTERVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) is advising motorists in the city of Cedartown and Polk County of a detour off Main Street/State Route (SR) 1 Business at the Norfolk Southern Railroad crossing, scheduled for Thursday and Friday, July 19 and 20, 2012, to accommodate work by the railroad company on installing deck panels and repaving the crossing.

Traffic will be detoured off SR 1 Business onto US 278/SR 6.

“We understand that the closure of Main Street at this location may cause some inconvenience and delays, but it is necessary for repairing the crossing as quickly as possible and giving the roadway back to local traffic and traveling public,” explained DeWayne Comer, district engineer at the Georgia DOT office in Cartersville.

Georgia DOT urges travelers to call 511 for updated information about this maintenance operation or any other construction project on interstates and state routes. Georgia 511 is a free phone service that provides real-time traffic and travel information statewide, such as traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures, and delays due to inclement weather. Callers also can transfer to operators to request assistance or report incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. More information is available at: www.511ga.org.
