Aragon officials are seeking a way to reduce the number of ducks currently residing at the millpond.

Mayor Ken Suffridge said his attention was caught June 2 by the amount of “duck doo” in the area where the annual Kids Day activities are held.

“I first thought it would be a great place for a car show,” he said. “However, I realized there was too much duck waste down there. No car owner would want to park their classic vehicle in the mess the fowls left behind.”

He said, during the June city council meeting, he had also had a complaint about the white-feathered residents roosting on a porch.

“Aragon has a problem at the millpond and we need to find a way to reduce the number of ducks,” he said.

Councilman Curtis Burris agreed to oversee this task. He said the overpopulation problem is the result of continued nesting and hatching of young.

“The females are good mothers and raising 10 to 15 little ducks at one time,” he said.

In addition to the ducks, Burrus said there are also wild geese at the pond.

Normally the geese migrate, but he emphasized that these do not.

“They seem to be happy and are not going anywhere,” he said.

Burrus hopes to find a humane answer to the problem and will make a recommendation to the mayor and city council at a later date.

“Why do you want to destroy the ducks?” one resident inquired.

Suffridge said this is not the idea. “We are not talking about killing them, but reducing their numbers.”

Just purchase a pair of swans. They will deal with other waterfoul.
