State Sen. Bill Heath (R-) said the General Assembly road is paved with budget obstacles.

“We’re in some very difficult times and I don’t know what to tell you at this point,” Heath said of the legislature dealing with the budget.

“I can assure you we are all working diligently to pass a budget.”

Legislators have started the process by looking at Gov. Sonny Perdue’s plan in joint budget committee meetings.

Heath said he really doesn’t like the governor’s plan with approximately $3 billion in combined budget cuts for FY 2009 and FY 2010 and a proposal for additional bond monies to jumpstart the construction industry with state projects. However, he said he doesn’t have a better answer.

Heath said Georgia is in better shape than many other states, including California with an approximately $21 billion budget deficit.
