Rockmart, which is also hosting the State tournament, opened play by defeating Athens 11-10 according to Rockmart Little League president Lee Hayes. Rockmart did stumble on Monday to Columbus 13-2, but they now have a chance to win their final two games and qualify for the semifinal round. Currently Rockmart is participating in the pool play round.
Rockmart is slated to play Richmond Hill today at 3 p.m., and will then close out pool play on Wednesday at 8 p.m. against Madison County. The games are being played at the Nathan Dean Sports Complex.
The players that make up the Rockmart All-Star team, who won the District 1 tournament to make it to state, are CJ Culver, Brayden Gilreath, McDuffy Waldrop, Hayden Hughes, Brayden Cole, Bailey Atkins, Paine Culver, Ty Floyd, Ryan French, Zoryan Hendricks, and Evan Ratcliff. Chris Culver is the manager and the assistant coaches are Jeremy Hayes and Drew Lindsey.
Hayes said the tournament, which features 10 teams from all across the state, has been running smoothly so far.
Play started on Saturday with Elbert County bashed Midway Heights 12-1. Dudley followed with a 6-5 win over Murphey Candler Blue. Madison County downed Richmond Hill 7-4 and Athens capped play on Saturday with a 4-3 win over Columbus.
On Sunday, Dudley blew out Peachtree City National 16-6, and Murphey Candler Blue bounced back to defeat Midway Heights 14-8. Rockmart took out Athens, and Columbus smacked Madison County 16-4.
On Monday, Murphey Candler Blue steamrolled Peachtree City National 11-1, and Dudley followed with a 10-7 win over Elbert County. Columbus defeated Rockmart on Monday, and Athens stopped Richmond Hill 11-6.
Currently, Dudley leads Pool A with a 3-0 mark. Murphey Candler Blue is 2-1 while Elbert County is 1-1. Peachtree City National and Midway Heights are both 0-2. In Pool B, Columbus and Athens are tied for the top spot with a 2-1 record. Rockmart and Madison County are next at 1-1, and Richmond Hill is in last at 0-2.
For the teams that make it out of pool play, they will play in the semifinals on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. The State championship game will be Friday at 7 p.m.
