The Polk School District Board of Education today announces its intention to increase property taxes it will levy this year by 1.93 percent over the rollback millage rate.

When the total digest of property is prepared Georgia law requires that a rollback millage rate must be computed that will produce the same total revenue on the current year's digest that last year's millage rate would have produced had no reassessments occurred.

The budget adopted by the board of education requires a millage rate higher than the rollback millage rate. Before the board may set a final millage rate, Georgia law requires that three public hears be held to allow an opportunity to express their opinions on this increase.

All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearings at the Polk School District Board Room, 612 South College St., Cedartown on Thursday, Oct. 4, at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. and on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m.

The website said that it would be around fifteen dollars. I would gladly pay that to help keep my grandchildren in the classroom and not keep taking days away from the classroom. Something has to be done. The school district can't print money...

They can't print money but they certainly know how to waste it. I'm sure they're salivating for the next seminar in San Francisco, New Orleans or some other expensive location where nothing of value to Polk schools will be learned. But many expensive meals and hotel rooms will be paid for by our tax dollars.

I don't beleive that only rich live here, but they raise taxes and spend money like that was true. Instead this is one of the poorest counties in the state. Is it there intention to keep raising taxes so people just walk away from their homes and Polk County because it is cheaper to live elsewhere. The home values have gone down. Repoed houses are selling for less than half what their original price, which makes our values go down but yet the property is valued at more each year which is their way of raising more tax dollars for them to BLOW. There is investors letting homes be repoed because it is not feasible to own in Polk County

We do not this kind of increase at a time when budgets are already stressed. Can't say I'm surprised that they are doing this since the board failed to meet its budget. This makes two years in a row our taxes have went up. Folks can not afford any more increases.mits time we held the board members accountable.

Go to the meetings and voice your opinion. They lose all their common sense when they are voted in. They must all be teachers or affliated with the School System. Check out their pay. Polk County is about the highest in Georgia. Only rich folks live here. And your property values.were raised, or at least some of us.
