Cedartown police arrested a Gainesville man on multiple charges, including kidnapping, on Feb. 15, according to reports from the Cedartown Police Department.

Police were dispatched to the Smart Mart in reference to a man kidnapping a woman from the parking lot. A witness told police the victim met David Bennet, 24, of 3402 Davis Bridge Road, Gainesville, at the store in order to get money from him.

The witness also told police the victim sat in the passenger's seat of Bennet's car to speak with him about the money. The victim said he saw Bennet strike the victim before driving away with her still in the car.

Police stopped Bennet's car at the Cedartown Dairy Queen parking lot on Main Street. According to police reports, the victim was visibly upset. Police reports state that a handgun was visible between the two seats, as well as money and bank deposit slips on the floorboard of the driver's side.

Officers removed Bennet from the vehicle and placed him in hand restraints during the on-site investigation. The victim told police Bennet had taken her to the parking lot against her will and would not let her out of the vehicle.

During a search of the vehicle, police discovered a loaded Glock 17 handgun. There was also $972 in currency inside the vehicle.

The victim told police she had met Bennet in the Smart Mart parking lot in order to retrieve approximately $3,000 Bennet had been saving for her.

Bennet was arrested on charges of battery, kidnapping and false imprisonment under the Family Violence Act (FVA).

Cedartown Assistant Police Chief Jamie Newsome. “I want to commend the officers for their ability to resolve the situation professionally.

This type of situation could have gotten very bad, very fast.”
