Lorene Parker, a fifth-grader at Eastside Elementary School, is an avid supporter of Polk County’s Relay for Life.

She has gained popularity for Lorene’s Angels, which was the focus of her fundraising efforts during 2011. In fact, this project added $712 to the total collected by volunteers.

This year Lorene is not only selling these angels, but she has expanded her work to include another fundraiser – a night at the movies.

McKenna Shoots for the Stars and SPY Kids will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 at West Cinema, 112 West Avenue, Cedartown. Tickets are $8 with $3 of each one sold will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

“I felt this would be something fun for younger people,” she said. “My friends are interested and have helped me spread the word.”

Advance tickets for the show are available at Sew Purdy and Smith-Lockwood, Rockmart and Bar-L, Rockmart and Cedartown, Pink Sugar and Bradford Pharmacy, Cedartown. These will also be available at the door.

Meanwhile, Lorene continues her fundraising efforts by offering handcrafted angels customized to honor loved ones affected by cancer or thank those caregivers that have made a difference. Plans are to place the angels in a special garden during Relay on May 3.

Lorene became a volunteer after a discussion with her parents, Karen and Mitch Parker. She wanted to do something to honor her paternal grandmother. Lorene Swint Parker lost the battle with leukemia in 1999.

Different colored ribbons are attached to the angels. Purple is for caregivers, gold designates in honor of and silver in memory of an individual.

“We will begin working on the angels after the movie night,” she said.

“I want to raise as much money as possible for Relay. We accept minimum donations of $10.”

Checks can be made out to the American Cancer Society and mailed to Lorene Parker, 338 Baldwin Road, Rockmart, GA 30153. For more information, call 678-757-0076.

“Lorene is always involved in projects that help others,” Mrs. Parker said. “We are there to support her.”
