Here are the states with the biggest increase and decreases in applications. The state data is for the week ended July 21, one week behind the national data.
States with the biggest decreases:
California: Down 32,107, due to fewer layoffs in services
New York: Down 15,615, due to fewer layoffs in transportation, educational services, and construction
North Carolina: Down 12,448, due to fewer layoffs in transportation equipment, textile mills, businesses services and durable goods
Georgia: Down 7,923, due to fewer layoffs in manufacturing, administrative support, trade and construction
Alabama: Down 5,122, due to fewer layoffs in transportation equipment, administrative support, and hotels and restaurants
Wisconsin: Down 4,427, no reason given
State with the biggest increase:
Kentucky: Up 4,073, no reason given
