Richard Gerald “Jerry” Haney, arrested during a series of “chop shop” raids in 2009, appeared before federal Magistrate Judge Walter T. Johnson for arraignment.
Haney was indicted by a federal grand jury on six charges including two counts of owning and operating a chop shop and four counts of trafficking motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts.
Haney was released on his own recognizance without a traditional bond. However, federal prosecutors asked the judge to order a $10,000 bond placed that Haney would be required to pay it if he doesn’t make his court appearance.
Johnson agreed to the request.
Haney’s pre-trial conference is scheduled for July 10 at 3 p.m. at U.S. District Court.
Haney was one of 14 arrested during the raids. Others arrested included Haney’s son Richard Todd Haney, who taught automobile shop at Cedartown High School, three local law enforcement officers, a former Acworth police officer, a former Polk County commissioner, and several junkyard owners.
