The project, launched in 2011, was discussed at a board retreat on Jan. 25.
Initial plans included replacing culverts on Brewster Field, Hampton, Pleasant Hill, Taylorsville-Aragon and John Redding roads. Board members approved Southern Engineers and Surveying, Inc. to design these culverts.
The work on John Redden and Brewster Field roads has already begun.
The cost of replacing the culverts is estimated at $300,000, which will be paid for by SPLOST funds.
Additionally, County Manager Matt Denton said Polk has received notice from the Georgia Department of Transportation to replace all street signs by January 2015 and regulatory signs – stop and yield – are to be replaced by 2018. Estimated cost is $80,000 to $90,000.
Polk’s Road Department will develop an inventory and replacement plan for this project.
Commissioner Phillip Bentley has asked board members to find the best use of county-owned 513.36 acres, located off Hendrix Road in the Fish Creek Community.
Bentley said plans need to be made for this land and suggested organizing a steering committee to make recommendations.
The property, sometimes called the Don Williams Park, was initially purchased in 2005. It was bought from Temple Inland at a cost of $1.7 million (SPLOST).
“We all know this development of this acreage is not a short but long-term project,” Bentley said. “It is something that can be done in phases.”
He also proposed public use of the firing range once it is completed. Chief Kenny Dodd, Polk County Police Department, said the site must first be fenced and a calendar worked out with Polk and Haralson law enforcement agencies.
Chairman Jason Ward asked Dodd to make recommendations to the Public Safety Committee for review and presentation at a later date.

It was a rose garden. The one constant during the past four years at the City is the Commissioners. We have had four City Managers but the Commissioners have been the constant.
