The referendum will be on the ballot for the Nov. 6, 2012 General Election.
The Polk County Board of Commissioners has voted to get the question before voters on that date.
Commissioner Marshelle Thaxton requested and the board approved the following:
“. . . a resolution to authorize the County permission to permit and regulate Sunday sales of malt beverages — package and by the drink — from 12:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.”
If approved, sales will begin on Dec. 1, 2012.
Commissioner Ricky Clark reminded the board that citizens defeated a similar proposal in March.
Ballot totals were:
Polk County — Sunday sales of malt beverages by the drink.
Yes — 2,633 (48.37 percent);
No — 2,811 (51.63 percent).
Polk County — Sunday sales of malt beverages by retailers.
Yes — 2,671 (48.37 percent);
No — 2,851 (51.63 percent).
Cedartown and Rockmart voters passed similar referendums that allowed Sunday sales within those municipalities. Aragon voters blocked a similar referendum on the July 31 primary election ballot.
In addition, board members approved a contract, totaling $39,500, with the Georgia Department of Corrections for an inmate/detainee work detail.
Each detail will have a maximum of 10 individuals as well as a full-time correctional officer.
The contract provides that either party with a notice of 7 calendar days can terminate it.
Commissioners also approved a resolution recognizing Bobby Haney, who has served 28 consecutive years on the Development Authority of Polk County.
Noted is the fact that, under his guidance, the County authorities have created more than 5,000 jobs, generated over $33 million in tax revenues, brought 11 new industries to Polk and filled 4 speculative buildings.
Haney has announced his retirement from the Development Authority of Polk County.
Chairman Cleve Hartley presented a proclamation declaring August as Brain Injury Awareness Month. He encourages local citizens to learn more about the effects of and support those who suffer from a brain injury.
