Emergency personnel responded to alerts of downed trees following a Fourth of July storm that swept through Cedartown around 5 p.m. Wednesday.

An oak tree snapped off at the trunk on Noyes Street, and the felled tree pulled down several power lines. Cedartown Fire and Rescue blocked the area while resident waited for Georgia Power Co. crews to arrive.

A portion of East Avenue near the intersection with Collard Valley Road also was temporarily blocked by large tree branches. Emergency personnel made opening the busy thoroughfare a priority, and the road was reopened to traffic by 5:20 p.m.

County officials had reports of more trees down along Collard Valley and Lees Chapel Road.

The storm also brought several inches of rain. Storm drainage ditches that had been dry and empty for several weeks were suddenly filled near to overflowing after the storm.
